Frequently Asked Questions
The 15 questions everyone is asking about Echoes of Aincrad, answered from official sources — updated as new information drops.
When does Echoes of Aincrad release?
July 9, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S (JST), and July 10, 2026 worldwide on PC via Steam. Details on the release date page.
What platforms is it on?
PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam). No PS4, Xbox One or Switch versions are announced.
Is Echoes of Aincrad multiplayer or an MMO?
Neither — it is a single-player action RPG. The MMO is the fictional setting; your companions are AI partners with their own skills and tactics.
Do you play as Kirito?
No. For the first time in the series you create your own avatar — one of the 10,000 trapped players. Kirito and Asuna appear as characters in the story. See the characters page.
What is Death Game Mode?
An optional permadeath modifier: if you die, your save file is permanently deleted, with save duplication blocked. It unlocks after one clear (or early via Deluxe/Ultimate editions). Full breakdown in our Death Game Mode guide.
Is it a soulslike?
The developers say no. Death Game Mode is optional; the base game offers four difficulties from Story to Very Hard.
How many weapon types are there?
Six: one-handed sword, two-handed sword, two-handed axe, dagger, rapier and mace. Compared in detail in the weapons guide.
What editions are available?
Standard ($69.99), Deluxe ($89.99 — adds expansion DLC, starter pack, early Death Game unlock) and Ultimate ($109.99 — adds bonus app and exclusive armor). Full comparison on the editions page.
What is the pre-order bonus?
The Proto-Elucidator weapon pack: early-game weapons across all six types, plus shields and blueprints. Included with every edition pre-order.
Who is developing it?
Game Studio Inc., published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, with series producer Yosuke Futami.
What are the PC system requirements?
Final specs are TBD. Confirmed: 64-bit required, Denuvo Anti-Tamper with a 5-system activation limit. We track everything on the system requirements page.
Is it canon to Sword Art Online?
It tells an original story set during the Aincrad era, running alongside the events fans know, starring your created character. Bandai Namco hasn't made formal canon claims — treat it as a parallel tale in the same catastrophe.
Do I need to know the anime first?
No. The premise is self-contained: 10,000 players trapped in a VR MMO where death is permanent, freedom requires clearing the castle. The game tells its own story from there.
Is there character creation?
Yes — a series first. Appearance customization plus build direction across speed, intelligence, endurance and defense stats. See the character creation guide.
What age rating does it have?
ESRB T (Teen 13+), with blood, violence, alcohol references and language listed as content descriptors.
