The protagonist: your created avatar
Echoes of Aincrad's biggest break with series tradition: the hero is a player-created character, one of the 10,000 trapped in the death game when the floating castle sealed its doors. Your avatar's look, build and combat identity are fully yours — appearance options, stat direction (speed, intelligence, endurance, defense), six weapon classes and partner choice. The story is described as an original tale running alongside the events of the Aincrad arc: you're not re-living the famous story, you're living yours inside the same catastrophe.
See the character creation guide for everything confirmed about building your hero.
Confirmed returning characters
Kirito
The Black Swordsman himself appears — but for the first time, not as your viewpoint. Official materials confirm you'll "explore the world alongside other characters, including Kirito." How large his role is, and whether the dual-wielding legend is a recruitable partner or a story presence, is still unrevealed. Either way, meeting the franchise's icon from the outside is a novel angle for long-time fans.
Asuna
The Lightning Flash is also confirmed to appear. In the Aincrad era she's the Knights of the Blood vice-commander and the fastest rapier in the castle — which makes the rapier's inclusion among the six weapon classes feel pointed. As with Kirito, her exact role (partner, quest-giver, story anchor) hasn't been detailed.
Bandai Namco has not yet published the full cast or partner roster. Trailers tease additional original characters — expect the lineup to firm up in the final pre-launch marketing push. This page updates as names are confirmed.
Partners: the cast you fight beside
The partner system means characters aren't just story — one accompanies you on every quest, with their own support skills, tactics and equipment. The roster grows as you progress: "form partnerships with other adventurers encountered throughout the story." The open question fans care about most: are Kirito and Asuna recruitable partners? No official answer yet. Our partner system guide covers how to think about partner choice regardless of who ends up on the roster.
The world as a character
Aincrad itself — the hundred-floor floating castle — returns as the stage: serene plains, perilous dungeons, and towns that serve as your base of operations. The map expands as the story progresses, with checkpoints anchoring exploration on each floor. For newcomers: the castle's rules are simple and brutal. Clear the boss of each floor to unlock the next; die anywhere, and (in the fiction — and in Death Game Mode, in reality) there is no respawn.
