Col & the In-Game Economy

Every heal, every upgrade, every consumable costs Col. Where the currency comes from, what the Merchant does with it, and how to budget so you're never broke before a boss.

Short version: Col is Aincrad's currency. You earn it as you travel and fight, and spend it two main places: the Merchant (items and crafted consumables) and the Smithy (weapon upgrades). The Merchant's stock grows with your Cardinal Rank. Col isn't glamorous, but it's the fuel behind every other town system — run dry and your upgrades stall and your consumable safety net disappears right when you need it.

Based on the demo build. The economy (Col earned through play, spent at the Merchant and Smithy, stock gated by Cardinal Rank) is drawn from the official Starter Guide and the demo. Exact prices, drop rates and sell values are not published.

Where Col comes from

Col flows to you through playing the game as intended — it's earned during travel and combat, so exploring the world and clearing enemies is your primary income. There's no need to grind a special money activity; the same field packs that feed your levels and drop crafting materials also line your pockets. A secondary source worth remembering: selling surplus. As you accumulate spare gear, duplicate weapons and materials you won't use, the Merchant will buy them — though weigh selling a spare weapon against keeping it as EX-Mod fusion fodder first. Don't sell a weapon with a great random effect just for quick cash.

What the Merchant does

The Merchant is your consumables-and-supplies hub, and it does two distinct things. It sells items for Col outright, and it crafts consumables and utility items — healing potions, the tactical tools you bring to fights, and more. That crafting role makes the Merchant more than a vending machine: it's where you stock the consumables and tactical items that can swing a hard fight, from HP recovery to the mines and explosive stones you set up in combat. Before a tough stretch or a boss Ark — where there's no shop inside — the Merchant is your last stop to top up.

Cardinal Rank grows the shop

The Merchant's stock isn't static — it expands with your Cardinal Rank. As you progress the story and discover new towns, better consumables and gear appear for sale. This has a practical scheduling upshot: if the shop feels thin, the fix is usually to advance Cardinal Rank, not to earn more Col. Money you can't spend on anything worth buying is just sitting there. It also means timing matters — arriving at the Merchant just after a Cardinal Rank bump gets you a better selection for the same Col, so it can be worth pushing a story beat before a big shopping trip rather than after.

How to budget your Col

Col competes across three demands — consumables, weapon upgrades, and (sometimes) new gear — so a little discipline keeps you solvent. A reliable priority order for a first character:

  1. Keep a healing stock. Never leave town for a hard fight without HP consumables. Dying because you skimped on potions to save Col is a bad trade — fatal in Death Game Mode.
  2. Upgrade your one main weapon at the Smithy. Concentrated investment in the weapon you actually use beats spreading Col thin.
  3. Gear your partner — budget for two characters, since partner power scales with investment.
  4. Save for the next tier. If nothing worth buying is in stock, bank Col rather than spending it on gear you'll outgrow, and revisit after your next Cardinal Rank bump.

The through-line matches every other system: concentrate, don't scatter. Col spent reinforcing one build — its main weapon, its consumables, its partner — does more than the same Col sprinkled across everything you own.

In the demo

The demo's Town of Beginnings introduces the Merchant and the Col economy alongside the Inn and Smithy — enough to learn the loop of earning Col in the field and spending it on consumables and upgrades in town. Because progress transfers to launch, the Col you bank and the buying habits you build now carry forward. The habit worth forming early: treat every trip into the field as an income run, and every trip to town as a resupply, so you're always heading into the next fight with a full consumable stock and a weapon that's kept pace. A player who manages Col well is rarely the one who dies with an empty potion pouch.

Common Col mistakes

A few money habits quietly sabotage early characters:

  • Skimping on consumables to save Col. A pouch full of Col does nothing if you die because you didn't buy potions. Healing items are the cheapest insurance in the game — always restock before a hard fight.
  • Spreading Col across gear you'll replace. Upgrading three weapons a little leaves all three underpowered; upgrading one weapon fully makes it carry you. Concentrate.
  • Hoarding Col with nothing to spend it on. If the shop is thin, that's a Cardinal Rank problem, not a savings goal — push the story, then come back and spend.
  • Auto-selling every spare weapon. Quick cash is tempting, but a weapon with a strong EX-Mod is worth more as fusion fodder than as Col. Check before you sell.
  • Forgetting the partner. An all-in-on-yourself budget leaves your partner as dead weight in the fights where you need them most.

Selling: cash now versus power later

The Merchant buys your surplus, which makes selling a tempting way to stay liquid — but it's a decision worth making deliberately rather than reflexively. The clean sells are easy: materials you have no use for, gear far below your current tier, and duplicate consumables you'll never carry. The judgment calls are weapons. Before selling any weapon of a type you use, ask whether its EX-Mods could feed a future fusion — if it carries a Stamina-reduction or attack roll your build wants, it's worth more in your storage than in the Merchant's till. A good rule: sell freely across weapon types you've ruled out, but keep spares of your main type until you understand its EX-Mod pool. The Col you'd gain from selling a well-rolled spare is almost always less than the value of the effect you could have fused from it. Liquidity is useful, but power compounds — and in a game where a good build is an accumulation of small edges, throwing those edges away for pocket change is a quiet mistake.

Col across the whole loop

Zoom out and Col is the connective tissue between every town system. The field gives you Col and materials; the Merchant turns Col into consumables and crafted tools; the Smithy turns Col and materials into gear; and Cardinal Rank decides how good all of it can get. None of these systems works in isolation — a Col shortage starves your consumables and your upgrades at once, while a healthy income keeps the whole loop turning. That's why "earn as you explore, resupply as you return" is the rhythm the economy rewards: it keeps Col flowing into the systems that keep you alive and hitting hard. Manage it well and you barely notice it; manage it badly and every other system stalls. In that sense, managing Col isn't a chore separate from the fun parts of the game — it's what makes the fun parts, from crafting the weapon you want to walking into a boss fully stocked, actually possible. A player who never seems to worry about money is usually one who quietly built good earning-and-spending habits early.
