Bandai Namco Entertainment has officially announced Echoes of Aincrad, a new action RPG in the Sword Art Online series developed by Game Studio Inc. The game launches July 9, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the Steam version following worldwide on July 10, 2026.
Echoes of Aincrad — Official Announcement Trailer
A series first: your own avatar
The headline change: players create their own protagonist rather than stepping into Kirito's boots. You play as one of the 10,000 players trapped inside the floating castle of Aincrad, living an original story that runs alongside the events of the era — with Kirito and Asuna confirmed to appear.
The premise, made mechanical
The announcement also confirmed the feature that has dominated discussion since: Death Game Mode, an optional permadeath setting in which dying permanently deletes your save file — finally making the franchise's famous stakes real. The mode targets second playthroughs, unlocking after one clear (or early for Deluxe and Ultimate edition buyers). We've since published a full Death Game Mode breakdown.
