Bandai Namco has officially announced that a free playable demo for the highly anticipated action RPG Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online will launch in mid-June. PC players will get access via Steam on June 15 at 10:00 AM PDT / 1:00 PM EDT, while PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players will see the demo unlock sequentially starting June 15 in North America and June 16 in Europe at midnight local time.
This announcement arrives right alongside the first batch of hands-on media previews. While early impressions of the custom hero focus and smooth performance are generally positive, a controversial progression mechanic has already divided the community.
The Custom Hero and Partner System Impressions
For the first time in the series, players are not forced to step into Kirito's shoes. Early previews praise the shift toward a fully customizable avatar. According to hands-on feedback, the character creation system allows players to forge their own identity in the deadly floating castle.
The game's partner system also drew attention, offering AI companions to assist in combat. However, some early players reported that the AI companions feel slightly overtuned, making early-floor encounters feel trivial.
Hub-Locked Gear Restrictions Spark Exploration Debates
The most significant point of discussion stems from how progression is handled during wilderness exploration. According to community reports and preview footage, players cannot swap equipment, level up, or upgrade their skills while actively exploring a floor. Instead, they must return to a town hub to manage their inventory and character builds.
On Reddit, players have expressed concern that this restriction will disrupt the flow of exploring the game's massive floors. Some users note that returning to the hub mid-quest might even cancel current progress, forcing them to stick with a setup until a quest is completed. While this mechanic could enhance the tension of the Death Game Mode by making field preparation more critical, others worry it might feel unnecessarily tedious.
What to Expect in the Upcoming Demo
The upcoming demo gives players a perfect opportunity to test these mechanics firsthand ahead of the game's official release date in July. The demo will likely feature initial floor exploration, allowing players to sample the six core weapons and evaluate the game's technical performance on both PC and console platforms.
